GRASP Rocks!

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        March 22nd, 2013
Dear Parents/Guardians,

Hello! This week the GRASP students participated in different activities this week in relation to our theme of Lambs. This was our theme to finish the saying we started earlier this month of “March comes in like a Lion and out like a Lamb. One of the activities involved making Scissor practice Lambs, doing Lamb Origami, and playing “Silly Silly Lamb”. We also played different games this week and learned about Lambs.

I would like to send out a big “Thank You!” to Mr. Hamiel and Mrs. Lipp for assisting GRASP with our Almond Bark Pretzel Fundraiser. The fundraiser was a big success and we could have not succeeded without their assistance. I would also like to send a “Thank You!” to everyone for supporting the GRASP program.

Next Week’s Agenda:   Easter
·        Monday- Easter- We will read a couple of fictional books that relate to Easter.
·        Tuesday- Bunny in a cup- We will be making Bunny faces in a bowl of pudding.
·        Wednesday- Paper Plate Rabbits- The students will trace a stencil on to a paper plate and then color.
·        Thursday- Colors or Computer- The students will be able to choose to play games on the computer or color Easter pictures.
·        Friday- No School- Good Friday.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Mr. Dalchow at Dan.Dalchow@k12.sd.us or 397-2317 or you can contact me at Rose.Long@k12.sd.us or at 605-216-0873.

I really enjoy working with the students that attend GRASP and would personally like to invite all students to GRASP. If your child would like to participate in the GRASP program, Department of Social Services does have a program available to assist you with the cost for those who qualify. Every day they are making memories and having fun! You can visit us at http://grotonareaost.blogspot.com/. Have a good weekend.

In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb

March Bulletin Board:

Two of our themes this month included Lions and Lambs. We worked with the saying "March comes in like a Lion and goes out like a Lamb." We started the idea by learning about Lions and creating pictures of Lions and then this week we learned about Lambs and added pictures of Lambs to our Bulletin Board. The students really enjoyed working with both themes. We are going to do similar themes that will include showers and flowers for April and May that go with the saying "April showers bring May Flowers." This is just a reminder from OST that Spring is on its way no matter what the weather is like. :)

Cheeseburger Sandwiches

Cheeseburger Sandwiches

The students created Cheeseburger Sandwiches during OST. We used vanilla wafers, strawberry and lemon frosting, and fudge marshmellow cookies. Our theme this week was Lions. Earlier in the week we learned that Lions like to eat meat. So we created these sandwiches because Cheeseburgers are made from meat. The students absolutely had a blast making and enjoying the sandwiches.

More Recent Activities

Recent GRASP Activities

Here are some more pictures of recent activities that we have been doing at GRASP.

Basketball Relays- The students had to pass the basketball over, under, over to the next person before the other team. We were working on our collaboration skills during this activity.

Music Freeze- The students had to dance while the music played and then freeze when it stopped. This is a very popular game that they really enjoy doing.

Free Time- One afternoon at GRASP, the students were able to choose what activity they wanted to do between playing with basketballs, playing with legos, and coloring. Some of the students assisted me in building this marble tower so that the marbles had to travel through a maze to reach the bottom.

Cooking- We always love these days. The students assisted in making a Valentines cookie. It was supposed to be in the shape of a heart, but didn't turn out that way, so we used food coloring and sprinkles on it instead.
